Description
Since 1976 David Armitage, mostly in collaboration with his wife Ronda, has illustrated some 20 picture books; one of these, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch, has been described as a ‘modern classic.’ Illustrations for Queen of the Night (published 1999) formed part of Crossover, the millennium exhibition at the Brighton Art Gallery. It was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Award in 2000. Illustrations from other books have been in exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom, including The Art of Reading at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate. Some illustrations from Queen of the Night were part of another exhibition called The Art of Reading at the Sevenoaks Library Gallery.
Turtle Gallery, Rye have regular exhibitions of David’s Illustrations.
David has also worked in educational publishing. His work includes A History of 20th Century Painting for older children. In 2000 David and Becky Edwards won the English Association’s Award for the Children’s Picture Book of the Year for “My Brother Sammy.” In 2003 this title also won the picture book section of the Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award for Exceptional Children in the USA.
